GE's New Campaign is a Beaut

Not sure where to begin with this – it's so well done. GE released this new campaign and it's chock-full of beauty. The art direction of the website is especially gorgeous and its got rich VO talent, beautiful 3D rendering, and the AWESOME Augmented reality feature integration.

The entire production is tied in well to the 'eco-tech' theme this brand exudes. Check this one out folks!

7-Election

7-eleven is keeping track of their customers preferences this upcoming presidential election. Every time a person comes in for a cup of coffee, they can choose either a blue Obama cup or a red McCain cup to show their support for either of the candidates. By visiting the accompanying website, 7-election.com, customers can see support results by state.

It's a nice concept and simple in nature. However, I'm thinking it may be slightly partisan. The effort seems to be leaning more in Obama's favor since many states not shown on the site have 7-eleven stores in them. Not to mention the probability that most of McCains supporters probably buy their java at the expensive Dean & DeLuca :-)

Get Jetting

JetBlue Sets Stage For Humanity In Air Travel

JetBlue has launched a fun and somewhat foolish campaign to bring back pleasantness to the airline business. The current state of airlines and their obnoxious costs, policies and overall experiences, bring today’s customers an unending headache. JetBlue has leveraged this opportunity to bring back an ounce of consideration for the customer and remind folks that their is a difference between "flying" and "jetting."

And this site certainly does a wonderful job in heroing the concept that JetBlue provides, but other airlines only claim to do. I'm personally unaware of JetBlue's specific culture as a corporation and brand, and I realize this is mostly for making fun of an otherwise sore subject, but I can't help but feel amused by this web experience and consider JetBlue for my next flight purchase. Sure, I know most people will not be asking for high-fives from flight attendants as the site exhibits; however, I would assume the underlying principle of more humanity in customer care and focus of a better experience is carried over to real life.

Among many other things, I really love the infusion of playful hyperbole and verbiage that further supports JetBlue's concept (i.e. "...good Jettiquette among your neighbors..." and ..."we just have one really great class, called Jetclass...") in the Jet Simulator portion. Great, great work!

Whitelines

Communicating On A Grid

Although this isn't directly related to advertising or marketing, I can see this being incredibly useful for graphic design professionals or anyone creative out there. Plus, it's just plain cool!

Allow me to introduce Whitelines. Whitelines is a great new product that is aimed at helping people communicate their ideas better. It's available in a variety of gorgeous binds to purchase from. As a professional communicator, I can appreciate the help a product like Whitelines provides since I'm often creating my own grids to design through. Instead, Whitelines makes things easier and cleaner for liberation of thinking with pre-made and clean grid foundations.

Designer Olof Hansson created this great product after wrestling with the problems he had photocopying his sketches. The issues were with standard grid-based papers intruding upon the contents of the sketches and scribblings. Hansson's solution of Whitelines is a defining idea of “non-conflict” lines in a negative space. The design solution supports the sketching, rather than interfering with it. Brilliant!

Dear God - Website

God's There For Us, Even On The Web

Sometimes we feel helpless. Oftentimes, personal prayer is elevated by talking with friends, family and maybe even small groups at your church. But what if you could voice your prayers to the world and help to heal and bring hope to others? That is exactly what was in mind for the creation of dear-god.net. The website was just recently launched and has already taken a large position on the Web for the world to embrace. The site design was done by something-somewhere.

What I personally love about the site is that it is a platform for so many people to be heard. It's a non-denominational portal and the term "God" is used for every religion’s concept of a higher power. No matter what though, a community has been created for all people to share. What's more is the idea that readers of your prayers can in turn encourage and further exalt in prayer with you.

Real Simple Renewal

Great Informational Design

A couple of years ago, I bought my wife a subscription to Real Simple Magazine. For those of you who are unfamiliar with this publication, it's a TV show and Magazine that targets women, providing practical and inspirational editorial for the home, cooking and other solutions.

It's evident through all communication channels that Real Simple delivers on their brand proposition and tagline of "Life made easier." A quick look at their website, writing and feature spreads reveals an elegant, modular and uber-clean grid system that works flawlessly to present all content to readers.

Just the other day, I received a renewal notice in the mail for the magazine subscription. There it was, an otherwise bland and uninspiring print piece alerting me that my wife's subscription will shortly end. I know I can't let this happen as my wife absolutely loves the tips and other goodies she receives every month through the magazine. Therefore, I begin to scan the notice and unfold it to view in entirety. I immediately noticed an intuitive and painless method for ensuring the continuation of my wife's subscription.

The magazine provides two bold, color coded stickers for recipients to quickly identify if they would or would not like to renew. Steadily progressing down the sheet, I'm presented with secondary gift options for spreading the love to friends and family and additional savings to myself. The use of color and horizontal white-space clearly define action items and make the digestion of information very accessible.

So, you might be wondering what my point is regarding all of this. Experiencing this method of renewal reminds me of the underlying identity Real Simple Magazine embodies. What is normally an annoying and arduous process, loaded with marketing clutter, becomes pleasant and easy! Other publications could learn from Real Simple.

IKEA Rooms

One of the Coolest Promos We've Seen

Just came across an absolutely phenomenal online promo site for IKEA. The site is so wonderfully done and I'm not quite sure where to begin in praise for this tasty little morsel. The promo serves as a lead-in to details on the various products IKEA provides in making your space comfortable and quiet.

The concept of life, and all associated craziness, picks visitors up and gently drifts them into several different "quiet spaces" they too can have with a room furnished by IKEA. Among many other things, the idea is great because it quickly gets to the heart of the Ad with fast-paced and quick-cut footage. Also, the ability to shift from different perspectives really provides immersion into the scenes.

Awesome overall art direction!

NBC Universal at CES 2008

Consumers, Content, Connection – It All Happens Here.
January 2008

For the first time, NBC Universal was a major component at the International Consumer Electronic Show (CES) in Las Vegas, NV. NBC Universal was the first-ever Official Broadcast Partner for CES. The media and entertainment giant positioned its involvement at CES 2008 with the slogan; “Consumers, Content, Connection – It All Happens Here.” The inaugural kick-off presented NBC Universal big and bold with a gorgeous booth complete with live broadcasting stages, blogger station, interactive content and download kiosks. USB key drives from SanDisk were given to attendees enabling them to browse and download their favorite NBC Universal. Talent gracing the booth included NBC Nightly News’ Brian Williams, The Today Show’s Al Roker, Access Hollywood’s Nancy O’Dell and CNBC’s Maria Bartiromo just to name a few.

As part of their CES experience, NBC Universal created a custom website http://nbcuatces.com specifically for the event. The site featured detailed information about NBCU and their booth, as well as up-to-the-minute blog posts about the excitement at CES. NBCU hired CAM Design, a strategic graphic design consultancy, to help in creation of web graphics for the NBCUatCES website to drive traffic to its booth location. CAM worked with NBCU and their internal team to create the main page promo spot and news ticker for this site. Working on an aggressive timeline, NBCU and CAM completed design of the graphics for the NBCUatCES website just before the New Year.

Huge crowds swarmed the NBC Universal booth at CES 2008. According to NBC Universal's blog on the CES site, nearly ten thousand pieces of NBC Universal content were downloaded by attendees. Overall CES was a big success for NBCU and they are already planning on returning in 2009.

Historic Mark Maker

Steven Heller On Wilhelm Deffke

J.A. Henkels

Interesting write-up on a significant individual that had prolific influence on the art and science of modern corporate logos. This post reveals the work and historic background of Wilhelm F. Deffke. Deffke, rarely noted in design history, was the creator of Zwilling J. A. Henckels AG mark among many others.

This post is great! It's an excellent look at Deffke and how his perspectives created and still maintain their stature today in corporate trade mark design. It is especially noted that Deffke was a precisionist. Deffke believed that a marking without unnecessary decor clearly strikes a chord with communications to the public and undeniably becomes the strongest tool for business to leverage.
