Real Simple Renewal

Great Informational Design

A couple of years ago, I bought my wife a subscription to Real Simple Magazine. For those of you who are unfamiliar with this publication, it's a TV show and Magazine that targets women, providing practical and inspirational editorial for the home, cooking and other solutions.

It's evident through all communication channels that Real Simple delivers on their brand proposition and tagline of "Life made easier." A quick look at their website, writing and feature spreads reveals an elegant, modular and uber-clean grid system that works flawlessly to present all content to readers.

Just the other day, I received a renewal notice in the mail for the magazine subscription. There it was, an otherwise bland and uninspiring print piece alerting me that my wife's subscription will shortly end. I know I can't let this happen as my wife absolutely loves the tips and other goodies she receives every month through the magazine. Therefore, I begin to scan the notice and unfold it to view in entirety. I immediately noticed an intuitive and painless method for ensuring the continuation of my wife's subscription.

The magazine provides two bold, color coded stickers for recipients to quickly identify if they would or would not like to renew. Steadily progressing down the sheet, I'm presented with secondary gift options for spreading the love to friends and family and additional savings to myself. The use of color and horizontal white-space clearly define action items and make the digestion of information very accessible.

So, you might be wondering what my point is regarding all of this. Experiencing this method of renewal reminds me of the underlying identity Real Simple Magazine embodies. What is normally an annoying and arduous process, loaded with marketing clutter, becomes pleasant and easy! Other publications could learn from Real Simple.
